The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced early on May 22 that it had intercepted a ballistic missile launched at the country from Yemen.
The ballistic missile attack, which was most likely carried out by the Houthis (Ansar Allah), set off sirens in wide swaths of central Israel.
“The alerts were activated in accordance with policy,” the IDF said in a statement, without elaborating on where and who the missile was intercepted.
Videos posted to social networks showed the debris of the missile falling like a meteor after the interception. No casualties or damage was reported by Hebrew media.
The attack came just three days after the Houthis said that they would impose a “naval blockade” of the port of Haifa in response to Israel’s “brutal aggression” on the Gaza Strip. The group called on all shipping companies to cease operations in the port, the largest in Israel.
Since March 18, when Israel first resumed operations in Gaza, the Houthis have launched some 36 ballistic missiles and at least 10 drones at Israel. Only one of the missiles managed to hit its target, while the rest were all either intercepted or fell short, according to the IDF.
The IDF resumed strikes on Yemen earlier this month. Around the same time, the United States suddenly halted an operation launched in mid-March against the Houthis.
Three waves of Israeli strikes hit Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in recent weeks. The strikes targeted civilian infrastructure, from the ports in al-Hodeidah, to cement factories, power stations and Sanaa International Airport in the Yemeni capital.
While recent strikes caused casualties and damage, they have failed to deter the Houthis or to degrade their military capabilities.
