Three more members of Hezbollah were killed in recent Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, amid silence from the group.
On May 13, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that it killed two members of the group in separate drone strikes on the region.
According to the IDF, one of the Hezbollah members was operating at a site belonging to the group near Beaufort Castle. Heavy strikes targeted the alleged underground site last week, killing a person and wounding at least eight others. The military said that the restoration of the site and activity there by Hezbollah “constitute a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.”
The second Hezbollah member was struck close to the town of Houla, the IDF added, without explaining why he was targeted.
Another drone strike hit the outskirts of the town of Qaaqaait al-Jisr on May 13, killing a man who was later described by the IDF as a “commander” of Hezbollah. According to the military, the commander served as the head of Hezbollah’s forces in the Qabrikha area.
Last November, Hezbollah accepted a ceasefire proposed by the United States following a costly confrontation with the IDF. The confrontation broke out more than a year earlier as a result of the Israeli war on the group’s ally, the Hamas Movement, in the Gaza Strip.
The ceasefire, which entered into effect on November 27, was supposed to end all clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border by February 18. However, the IDF continued to launch strikes against Hezbollah.
Israel also kept troops at five strategic posts in southern Lebanon, in violation of the agreement which called on both sides to withdraw from the region.
Hezbollah has so far refrained from responding to Israel’s repeated strikes, despite losing more than 140 of its members in the last six months or so. Faced with unprecedented pressure from the Lebanese government, the group will not likely change this stance any time soon. Still, this passive stance will not likely prevent Israel from escalating even further.
