A Hezbollah commander allegedly responsible for several rocket attacks on northern Israel was killed on April 7 in a drone strike claimed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF)
Lebanon’s official National News Agency said that the strike hit “in front of a motorcycle repair shop” in the town of Taybeh. Later, the health ministry confirmed that one person was killed in the strike.
In a statement released later, the IDF said that the drone strike targeted Muhammad Adnan Mansour, the commander of Hezbollah’s rocket unit in the Taybeh area. The commander directed and carried out numerous projectile attacks toward the Upper Galilee area,” the military added.
Hezbollah began launching attacks against Israel on October 8 of 2023, in support of the Palestinian Hamas Movement, which had launched a surprise attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel just a day earlier. After taking heavy losses, the group agreed to a ceasefire last November.
The United States-brokered ceasefire was supposed to end all clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border by February 18. However, the Israeli military continues to launch strikes against Hezbollah. It also maintains troops at five strategic posts in southern Lebanon.
Israel escalated in recent weeks, launching two strikes against targets of Hezbollah in the capital, Beirut, on March 27 and April 1 in response to rocket attacks which the group denied responsibility for. Hassan Bdair, a senior intelligence commander of the group, was killed in the second strike.
In another escalation, an Israeli strike hit the Lebanese coastal city of Sideo on April 4, killing Hassan Farhat, a senior official of Hamas.
Hezbollah has so far refrained from responding in order to avoid another costly confrontation with the IDF. However, neither Israel nor the U.S. appear to be satisfied.
U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East Morgan Ortagus discussed the ceasefire with senior Lebanese officials on April 5.
The next day, a Lebanese official revealed that Ortagus discussed disarming Hezbollah, without setting a deadline during her meetings in Beirut.
In an interview with Lebanese television channel LBCI broadcast, Ortagus said Washington continued to press Lebanon’s government “to fully fulfill the cessation of hostilities, and that includes disarming Hezbollah and all militias,” adding it should happen “as soon as possible.”
Speaking on April 7, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that the issue needed to be resolved “through communication and dialogue because in the end, Hezbollah is a Lebanese component.”
The president also urged Washington to pressure Israel to withdraw from the five border posts, saying the ongoing troop presence “complicates the situation.”
Overall, Hezbollah is facing unprecedented pressure not only from Israel and the U.S., but also from other parties in Lebanon. The group’s future appears to be in limbo. With no clear path out of this situation, the group could reorganize its forces on a much smaller scale, or even move away from the Iran-led Axis of Resistance.
