أعلنت قوات الدفاع الإسرائيلية (IDF) في 11 أغسطس أن جنودها اعتقلوا ليلاً في مدينة ترينجة داخل المنطقة العازلة المجاورة لمرتفعات الجولان في جنوب سوريا «تاجر أسلحة».
الغارة نفذها اللواء 226 للمظليين الاحتياطي، بدعم من محققين ميدانيين في الوحدة 504 بالمخابرات العسكرية، كما ذكرت القيادة العسكرية في بيان، مضيفة أن الاعتقال جاء بناءً على معلومات استخباراتية ومراقبة سابقة. كما مقُدِت الأسلحة المكتشفة في المنطقة، وأُخذ المشتبه به لإجراء الاستجواب.
وفقا لـ IDF، لا تزال القوات منتشرة في القطاع لصد تمركز «عناصر إرهابية» في سوريا وحماية سكان إسرائيل، خصوصاً في مرتفعات الجولان.
في 3 أغسطس، أُعلنت غارة مماثلة من قبل IDF. قامت القوات الإسرائيلية باستجواب عدة تجّار أسلحة مشتبه بهم في مدينة هادير وصرّحت بأن الأسلحة صُودرت.
غزت IDF المنطقة العازلة قبل ساعات قليلة فقط من سقوط نظام الرئيس السابق بشار الأسد في ديسمبر الماضي. ثم قامت بتدمير جزء كبير من القدرات العسكرية للبلاد. وعلى الرغم من هذه الأفعال، فإن الحكومة المؤقتة الجديدة بقيادة الإسلاميين في سوريا تشارك في محادثات مع إسرائيل.
صرّح كبار المسؤولين الإسرائيليين علناً بأنها ستحوّل جنوب سوريا إلى منطقة منزوعة السلاح. ووفقاً لهذه السياسة، تدخلت IDF الشهر الماضي عندما نشرت الحكومة أسلحة ثقيلة خلال معركة مع مقاتلي الدروز في محافظة السويداء الجنوبية.
وفي وقت لاحق في 8 أغسطس، قالت IDF إن إحدى طائراتها بدون طيار قصفت رشاشاً ثقيلًا مُثبتًا على سطح شاحنة بيك أب في جنوب سوريا لتطبيق هذه السياسة.

بشكل عام، يستمر حكام سوريا الجدد في إعطاء الأولوية للدبلوماسية مع إسرائيل، بينما يعملون على قمع أي معارضة داخل البلاد، وخاصة من الأقليات. يبدو أن هذا يشجّع إسرائيل على التورّط بشكل أكبر في البلاد، على سبيل المثال من خلال توسيع نفوذها في الجنوب.
