A missile that was launched by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) from Yemen landed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula overnight, Hebrew media reported on March 16.
The Times of Israel said that the missile fell close to the city of Sharm el-Sheikh, which is located between the desert of Sinai and the Red Sea. Nevertheless, there were no reports of any blasts or impacts near the resort city by Egyptian media.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) is reportedly investigating whether the missile intended to target Israel, although so far is unable to verify this.
The incident took place as the United States military was launching dozens of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen upon orders from President Donald Trump, who said that the large-scale attack was a response to the group’s attacks on shipping.
“To all Houthi terrorists, YOUR TIME IS UP, AND YOUR ATTACKS MUST STOP, STARTING TODAY. IF THEY DON’T, HELL WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE!” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. “Do NOT threaten the American People, their President… or Worldwide shipping lanes. If you do, BEWARE, because America will hold you fully accountable and we won’t be nice about it!”
The U.S. Central Command described the large-scale attack, which claimed the lives of at least 31 people, as the start of a large-scale operation targeting the Houthis across Yemen. From their side, the Houthis warned that the deadly strikes “will not pass without response.”
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked Israel and Red Sea shipping throughout the Israeli war on the Hamas Movement in the Gaza Strip.
Last week, the Houthis said they would resume attacks on Israeli ships passing through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden, ending a period of relative calm that started in January with the ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The alleged failed missile attack could provide Israel with a pretext to join U.S. operations against the Houthis. Over the past year, the IDF launched several waves of strikes against Yemen, targeting mainly civilian infrastructure in Houthi-controlled areas. However, the group was not deterred.
