The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched on April 9 a series of strikes against military sites in southern Syrian governorate of Daraa in response to a rocket attack that targeted the occupied Golan Heights.
At least one rocket was reportedly launched at the Golan Heights from the western Daraa countryside late on April 8, setting off sirens in the settlement of Yonatan. According to the IDF, the projectile hit an open area, causing no injuries.
In an initial response, the IDF announced in the early morning of the next day that it had targeted sites belonging to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the town of Mhajjah in the northern Daraa countryside. Syrian media confirmed that the al-Kam ammunition depots, which are located next to Mhajjah, were struck.
Another Syrian Army post was shelled with artillery, as was the rocket launch site, the IDF added in its statement.
Later in the day, the IDF announced in another statement that it had carried out a strike against a SAA site in southern Syria, near Israel’s border, which was identified as being used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The IDF went on to claim that it had intelligence indicating that members of Hezbollah had been using the targeted SAA site.
“The IDF holds the Syrian regime accountable for all activities which take place within its territory and will not allow for any attempted actions which could lead to the entrenchment of Hezbollah on the Syrian front,” the statement reads.
Rocket attacks from southern Syria against the Golan Heights became a regular occurrence after the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
The IDF also significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the beginning of the war, hitting Syrian military positions and targeting members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hezbollah and affiliated forces.
This was the second rocket attack from Syria to target the Golan Heights since the April 1 Israeli strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus. At least 13 were killed in the attack. Seven IRGC members were among the victims, including two senior commanders of the Quds Force, Brigadier Generals Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi.
Iran vowed a harsh response to the Israeli attack. However, it is very unlikely that Syria will take part in any military action by Tehran as this could lead to dangerous confrontation.
