The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on November 7 that it had expanded its ongoing ground operation in the northern Gaza Strip to the town of Beit Lahiya.
The Kfir Brigade began operations in Beit Lahiya in the past day, the IDF said in a statement, noting that it had prior intelligence, and evidence on the ground, of operations by the military wing of the Hamas Movement, the al-Qassam Brigades, there.
Some 3,000 Palestinians are estimated to be residing in Beit Lahiya. The IDF said that it will allow the civilian population to safely evacuate the town as the troops operate against Hamas.
On the very first day of operations in Beit Lahiya, one soldier with the Kfir Brigade’s Nahshon Battalion was seriously wounded, according to the IDF.
The IDF operation in northern Gaza began last month from the Jabaliya refugee camp. Israeli troops displaced tens of thousands of Palestinisns from the region. At least 1,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed there so far.
From its side, the IDF lost at least 18 troops in northern Gaza in recent weeks. Multiple Merkava main battle tanks and other military vehicles were also destroyed by the fighters of the al-Qassam Brigades and other Palestinian armed factions.
The decision to expand operations in northern Gaza came right after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who was reportedly keen to strike a ceasefire deal and secure the release of remaining Israeli hostages from the Strip.
It also came after Donald Trump, who is very close to Israel, secured a decisive win in the United States presidential elections.
Overall, Israel appears to be determined to go on with its war on Gaza. The death of over 43,000 Palestinians does not appear to be enough for Netanyahu.
