On February 14, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that its troops had killed more fighters of the Hamas Movement during battles in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip and in the central part of the Palestinian enclave.
Troops from the 646th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade operating in Khan Younis spotted two fighters of Hamas, one of whom was armed with a rocket-propelled grenade, and called in an airstrike on them, the IDF said.
In western Khan Younis, the IDF said that soldiers of the Commando Brigade located several tunnel shafts, killed several Hamas fighters and raided “significant” sites belonging to the group.
The IDF also said that strikes were carried out against a four-man Hamas cell that was planning to ambush troops in Khan Younis.
Meanwhile, in central Gaza, the Nahal Brigade killed more than ten Hamas fighters over the past day during a number of encounters, including by calling in airstrikes, according to the IDF.
It’s worth noting that the IDF announced the death of two service members a day earlier. Their death brought the toll of Israeli troops killed since the start of ground operations in Gaza to 232. More than 1,300 others have been reportedly wounded.
While the IDF claims that its recent operations in Gaza targeted Hamas and other armed factions only, the death toll in the Strip continues to grow.
The Hamas-run health ministry said in a statement on February 14 that 28,576 Palestinians have been killed since the outbreak of the war. More than 68,291 others have been wounded. During the last 24 hours only, the IDF killed 103 Palestinians and wounded 145 others, the ministry added.
The number of casualties in Gaza will likely continue to grow as there are no signs of the war ending anytime soon. Indirect talks between Israel and Hamas are not making any progress and the IDF is reportedly preparing a large-scale attack on the city of Rafah and nearby areas in the southernmost part of the Strip, which hosts more than one million refugees.
