The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on October 10 that a reservist was killed fighting Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
The slain reservist was serving as a sergeant major in the ranks of the Alon Brigade’s 5030th Battalion, according to the military, who said that another reserve soldier from the same unit was seriously wounded in the same incident and taken to a hospital.
This was the 12th Israeli soldier to be killed in the ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and during operations on the border.
Also on October 10, the IDF said in a statement that its fighter jets struck and killed two Hezbollah commanders in south Lebanon.
One of the commanders was named as Ahmad Mustafa Alhaj Ali, responsible for the firing of hundreds of rockets and anti-tank missiles at the border settlement of Kiryat Shmona. The other was Muhammad Ali Hamdan, commander of Hezbollah’s anti-tank corps in Meiss al-Jabal, across the border from Kiryat Shmona, who the IDF said was also behind many attacks on northern settlements.
Over the past day, more than 110 strikes hit targets of Hezbollah in Lebanon, according to a separate statement by the military.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
The IDF officially announced the launch of a limited ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on September 30.
Overall, the confrontation has so far resulted in 28 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 34 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, at least 2,141 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
