The Israeli Air Force (IAF) released footage on September 12 showing the interception of suicide drones launched from Yemen by the Houthis (Ansar Allah).
In a statement, the air force said that a total of ten Houthi drones were intercepted over southern Israel over the past week.
“The Air Force will continue to operate to remove any aerial threat in the skies of the country and to protect the citizens of the State of Israel,” it added.
Between September 7 and 11, the Houthis announced launching a total of 17 suicide drones at different targets in southern Israel.
The country admitted that one of the drones hit the terminal of Ramon International Airport on September 7. A man was lightly wounded by the attack. Another drone was intercepted near the settlement of Dimona, where a key nuclear reactor is located, on September 8.
The footage released by the IAF revealed that the Houthis likely used a type of long-range suicide drones known as “Yafa” in their recent attacks on Israel.
The Yafa is a larger version of an Iranian suicide drone codenamed by the United States military and intelligence as KAS-04 with an estimated range of around 2,000 kilometers. The Houthis have been operating several versions of the KAS-04 dubbed Samad-1, 2, 3 and 4 for more than seven years now.
The air force footage also revealed that the drones were intercepted by AH-64 Apache attack helicopters. They were apparently gunned down with the helicopter’s 30 mm M230 Chain Gun.
Israel was likely the first country to use attack helicopters as drone hunters, a tactic that has now become prevalent. Helicopters can fly at low altitudes and speeds which make them very suitable for intercepting slow and small aerial targets like drones.
Since March 18, when the Israel resumed its offensive in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have launched more than 35 suicide drones and at least 81 ballistic missiles at the country.
The group’s latest attacks were clearly more effective than before, with over 60 percent of the drones launched from Yemen reaching Israel. While the IAF has been so far able to limit this threat, any further increase in the intensity of these attacks could overwhelm its capabilities.
