Australia is reportedly investigating whether Iran may have been involved in the December 14 terror attack at a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, which killed at least 15 and injured more than 40, despite that all available evidence suggests that the attackers were linked.
Israel’s Channel 12 said that the Mossad spy agency notified Australian intelligence about Iranian-backed “terror infrastructure” in the country planning to carry out attacks on Jewish targets about a month ago.
Almost all of the infrastructure was taken apart by Australian authorities after receiving the Israeli warning, according to the report, which said that Australian intelligence is now investigating whether the perpetrators of the deadly attack at Bondi Beach were part of the Iranian effort.
Israeli attempts to link Iran to violence against Jewish communities around the world, including in Australia, are nothing new.
In August, Australia blamed Iran for involvement in two arson attacks from last year that targeted the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne and a kosher restaurant in Sydney, using members of organized crime gangs.
Canberra also expelled Iran’s ambassador at the same time, and announced it would list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terror organization.
Later in October, Mossad unveiled in a report what it described as a trans-national “terror network” run by the Quds Force, the extraterritorial operations branch of the IRGC. It claimed that the network was responsible for a string of recent attacks on Jewish sites in Western countries, including Australia.
Senior Quds Force commander Sardar Ammar was identified by the report as the head of the network, which the spy agency said that it intensified its efforts to attack Jewish and Israeli sites around the world since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel of 2023.
Away from these accusations, all available evidence suggests that the two behind the Bondi Beach attack had links to ISIS, not Iran.
Australia’s ABC identified the attackers as Naveed Akram, 24, and his father Sajid, 50. An official from the country’s Joint Counter Terrorism Team told the news outlet that an ISIS flag had been found in their car close to the attack.
Sajid was shot dead by police on the scene of the attack. However, Naveed is critically wounded and in the hospital under police guard. He was arrested after he was disarmed by a brave bystander, according to local reports, and will face charges if he survives.
In addition, ABC reported that Naveed had been probed by ASIO, the country’s domestic intelligence agency, in 2019 for his close ties to an ISIS cell.
Officials told the news outlet that Naveed was close to members of the cell including Isaac El Matari, an ISIS terrorist arrested that year who identified himself as the group’s head in Australia. Matari is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence.
“One of these individuals was known to us, but not in an immediate-threat perspective, so we need to look into what happened here,” ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said.
Even Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed on December 15 that the son came to the attention of Australia’s security services in 2019.
“He was examined on the basis of being associated with others, and the assessment was made that there was no indication of any ongoing threat or threat of him engaging in violence,” he said.
It’s worth noting that Iran was among the first countries to condemn the attack at Bondi Beach, even describing it as “terrorism”.
“We condemn the violent attack in Sydney, Australia,” foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said in a Persian-language post on X, adding that “Terrorism and the killing of human beings, wherever it is carried out, is unacceptable and condemned.”
Since the end of the 12-day June war, Israel has embarked on a media campaign accusing Iran of everything from attempting to restore its nuclear program, to sponsoring attacks on Jewish communities around the world, and more recently accelerating the production of missiles.
While all evidence in the Bondi Beach attack indicates that ISIS was responsible, or at least members of the group acted on their own accord, it won’t be surprising if Australia ended up accusing Iran in some way or another based on some intelligence from Israel.
Such an accusation could serve as the pretext for another war with the Islamic Republic, one that could see a border coalition led by the United States fighting in it alongside Israel.
