Israel Threatens Iraq Over Alleged Iranian Sabotage Plot

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed on April 24 it had uncovered an Iranian “sabotage plot” involving coordination with Iran-aligned armed factions in Iraq, adding that it is closely monitoring these networks and will act against them when necessary.

Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesperson, accused the intelligence branch of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of “advancing plans aimed at targeting Israelis inside and outside Israel amid the ongoing conflict.”

He revealed that the Israeli military, in coordination with the Shin Bet security agency and the Mossad spy agency, has targeted individuals allegedly involved in these activities, including Majid Khademi, described as head of the unit, and Mohsen Souri, identified as head of sabotage operations and a key figure in advancing the plans.

Khademi was killed during the American-Israeli war on Iran, specifically on April 6. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei condemned the assassination, praising Khademi as “self-effacingly struggling on the path of God for decades in the fields of the nation’s security, intelligence, and defense.”

“In recent weeks, an Iranian sabotage plot has been promoted, involving close ties with pro-Iranian militias in Iraq. Foreign entities are also involved, and the plot receives direct funding from Iran,” Adraee said.

“The IDF is closely monitoring all terrorist networks in the region and will act against them as needed,” he warned.

Earlier in the day, the U.S. The State Department offered up to $10 million for information on the leader of Kataeb Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS), one of the main Iran-aligned armed factions in Iraq.

American officials said in a social media post that they are seeking information on KSS leader Hashim Finyan Rahim al-Saraji, also known as Abu Alaa al-Walai.

The group has “killed Iraqi civilians and attacked US diplomatic facilities in Iraq, as well as attacking US military bases and personnel in Iraq and Syria,” the post reads.

Al-Saraji has a seat within the Coordination Framework, the ruling Shiite political alliance that holds the parliamentary majority.

During the war, Iran-aligned armed factions targeted the U.S. embassy in Iraq’s capital, its diplomatic and logistics facility at Baghdad’s airport, and oil fields operated by foreign companies. Bases hosting American forces in countries neighboring Iraq were also targeted by these factions.

The IDF’s warning is highly unusual. Israel passed many such warnings to Iran in recent years, according to several reports, but it did so privately.

The warning may be meant to provide pretext for future Israeli military operations against Iraq, especially if the ceasefire with Iran collapses.
