Late on September 15, an Israeli drone strike targeted an observation post of the Hamas Movement in the Gaza Strip following protests by Palestinians on the separation line.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that hundreds of Palestinians “rioted” on the separation line in the afternoon.

The protestors set off explosive devices on the separation line and hurled grenades, according to the IDF, who added that troops stationed there responded with riot dispersal means and live fire in some cases.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said that nine Palestinians were wounded by Israeli fire and crowd dispersal means. According to Palestinian media, among the wounded was a photojournalist who was hit in the hand by a tear gas canister.

There were no reports of any Palestinian casualties following the Israeli drone strike. Hamas didn’t respond or make any comment.

There have been several protests along the Gaza border in recent weeks. The protests gained momentum on September 13 after six Palestinians were killed in a blast near the separation line. The IDF alleged that the Palestinians were attempting to detonate an explosive device.

Hamas, the de-facto ruler of Gaza, is allowing the protests to draw attention to the worsening living conditions in the impoverished coastal strip after Qatar, one of the biggest donors of the movement, has cut back on monthly disbursements.

The Israeli drone strike was seen as a warning to Hamas. However, the movement will not likely comply and stop the protests unless Israel eases its blockade on Gaza.
