Early on March 24, Israeli airstrikes targeted the outskirts of the northeastern Lebanese city of Baalbek, a known stronghold of Hezbollah.
In a statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that its fighter jets “struck a Hezbollah manufacturing site containing weapons in the area of Baalbek.”
The AFP correspondent said that the Israeli airstrikes targeted a Hezbollah center that had been deserted for some time, wounding three residents in nearby buildings.
The airstrikes were apparently a response to an earlier attack by Hezbollah, in which two suicide drones launched by the group from Lebanon targeted launchers of the Iron Dome air defense system near the northern Israeli settlement of Kfar Blum. The group said that the attack, which took place on March 23, was carried out in support of the Palestinian people and resistance in the Gaza Strip. From its side, the IDF said that the attack didn’t result in any losses.
The IDF also said in the same statement that “approximately 50 launches were identified from Lebanon toward northern Israel, a number of launches were intercepted while the rest fell in open areas.” Hebrew media didn’t report any casualties after the attack.
Hezbollah later announced that it had fired “more than 60 Katyusha rockets” at the IDF missile and artillery base in the settlement of Yoav and the Kela barracks, the headquarters of the Air and Missile Defense Command, in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights in retaliation to the Israeli airstrikes on Baalbek. The group noted that troops from the IDF’s Golani Brigade were holding drills in the targeted sites at the time of the rocket attack.
Since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza last October, Hezbollah began launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Strip.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in seven civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least ten IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 300 people have been killed, including 228 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 50 civilians.
