Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on August 31 that Abu Obaida, the military spokesman for Hamas, was killed in a strike on the Gaza Strip a day earlier.
Writing on the X social network, the minister said that the charismatic spokesman of the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, “was sent to meet all the eliminated members of the axis of evil from Iran, Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen at the bottom of hell.”
“Soon, as the campaign over Gaza intensifies,” Katz continued, “he will meet many more of his partners in crime there — Hamas murderers and rapists.”
Abu Obaida, whose real name is said to be Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout, always masked with a Keffiyeh in his video statements. After the outbreak of the war in Gaza, the Israeli Defense Forces published an illustrative photo of what his face looks like. A real photo purported to show him was released by the military following Katz’s announcement.
The spokesman’s charismatic video statements made him a symbol for the resistance of Palestinians in Gaza all over the world.

The IDF and Shin Bet security agency said in a statement on August 30 evening that they had carried out an airstrike on a “senior Hamas operative” in the Gaza City area, in northern Gaza.
While the statement did not provide the identity of the targeted operative, multiple Hebrew and Arab media reports said that the target was non-other-then Abu Obeida. A later statement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Abu Obeidah was the target.
Ahead of Katz’s announcement, the Saudi-owned news channel Al-Arabiya quoted a Palestinian source as saying that Abu Obeida was killed, along with all the other people who were in the targeted apartment in Gaza City when it was struck by the IDF. A total of 11 people, including children, were reported killed in the strike.

Hamas has not yet issued an official statement confirming or denying the death of Abu Obeida. The IDF made false reports regarding assassinations in Gaza in the past.
The targeting of Abu Obeida came as the IDF is preparing to storm Gaza City, in a bid to deal a final blow to Hamas and force it to surrender.
In a statement issued on August 29, Abu Obeida warned Israel that its planned offensive would subject hostages in the area to the “same risks.”
