The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched late on March 17 multiple waves of strikes against targets in both Syria and Lebanon.

In Syria, the main target of the strikes was the southern region. Two key bases of the former Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the governorate of Daraa, the 132nd Brigade near the city of Daraa and the 175th Regiments near the town of Izzra, were both hit, in addition to other military sites close to the city of Kiswah in the Rif Dimashq governorate.

The IDF said in a statement that the strikes destroyed headquarters and other facilities used to store weapons and equipment belonging to the SAA, adding that it has identified attempts by unspecified groups to use those weapons.

“The presence of these [weapons] in southern Syria is a threat to the State of Israel. The IDF will not allow the existence of a military threat in southern Syria and will act against it,” the military stressed.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strikes killed a Syrian soldier and three civilians. Many others were reportedly wounded.

Meanwhile in Lebanon, the strikes hit the Beqaa Valley in the south. Multiple positions along the course of the Litani River between the towns of Zalaya and Qaliya, as well as the Labaya Hima area were hit, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. No casualties were reported, however.

In a statement released later, the IDF announced that it  struck positions of Hezbollah after it identified operatives and weapons at them.

“The terror activity at these sites poses a threat to the State of Israel and is a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon,” the military said.

The Israeli strikes came as both Syria and Lebanon announced a ceasefire following border clashes that broke out a day earlier. The clashes claimed the lives of 11 Syrians and seven Lebanese, with Damascus accusing Hezbollah of being involved.

Overall, Israel continues to take advantage of the troubled situation in both Syria and Lebanon to expand its operations against what it deems as threats in both countries.
