Israel’s Shin Bet security agency announced on November 27 that it had foiled an Iranian attempt to smuggle large amounts of advanced weapons to Palestinian armed factions in the occupied West Bank.
A shipment of advanced weapons destined for factions in the Jenin refugee camp was seized in a joint operation with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the organization said in a statement.
It added that another position where a large number of weapons from Iran had been buried was later uncovered by its agents.
Among the weapons captured were 40 “quality” claymore-type explosive devices and 33 makeshift claymores, along with remote detonation systems; six rocket-propelled rocket launchers and 24 rocket-propelled grenades; three 107mm rockets; two 60mm mortar launchers and 20 mortars; six M16 assault rifles and one M4 rifle; seven sniper rifles; and 37 handguns.
Heavy weapons like rocket-propelled grenades, rockets and mortars are not among the armament of Palestinian factions in the West Bank.
According to the Shin Bet, two units of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ special forces, Unit 4000 and Unit 18840, were responsible for the weapon smuggling attempt.
Unit 4000 is the special operations division of the IRGC’s Intelligence Organization, headed by Jawad Ghafari and Unit 18840 is the special operations unit of the IRGC’s Quds Force in Syria, which is subordinate to the head of Iran’s clandestine Unit 840, Asghar Bakri.
“The seized weapons are part of an ongoing Iranian campaign to destabilize security in the region, by arming terror cells in Judea and Samaria whose goal is to carry out attacks against Israeli citizens and IDF troops,” a statement from the agency read.
Similar shipments of weapons were intercepted by the Shin Bet while on their way to the West Bank in March and August of last year, with Israel holding Iran responsible at the time.
The Shin Bet announcement came just a few days after the IDF said it had begun preliminary work to establish a fence along the entire border with Jordan to prevent infiltrations into Israel. The country appears to be deeply worried about the security situation in Jordan.
