Israel has expanded its offensive against the Hamas Movement in the northern and central parts of the Gaza Strip, as talks on a new ceasefire and hostage exchange deal in Qatar hit another setback.
On May 22, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued a wide evacuation warning for northern Gaza as part of Operation Gideon’s Chariots, which began last week.
In a post on the X social network, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, Colonel Avichay Adraee, called on Palestinians residing in the areas of Sheikh Zayed, Salatin, Beit Lahiya, Jabalia and nearby towns to evacuate south.
The spokesman warned that the IDF will operate “with great force” in these areas, and they are considered “dangerous combat zones.”

Later, the IDF issued another evacuation warning to Palestinians in the Deir al-Balah area of central Gaza, telling them to stay away from several locations where the military claimed senior members of Hamas were operating.
“To the residents of Deir al-Balah, this is a warning about Hamas elements hiding among you!” Col. Adraee said on X.
“The attached image shows how Hamas terrorist elements operate in your area, using your civilian infrastructure and positioning themselves in your vicinity,” he added.
The map shared by the spokesman showed Deir al-Balah’s municipality building, an educational institution, a hospital, and a tent camp.
“Hamas exploits your civilian infrastructure and resources for its terror activities. We call upon you to expel the terrorist elements from among you and to stay away from the Hamas structures that are near you,” Adraee said.

Amid the warnings, Gaza’s Hamas-run civil defense agency revealed that Israeli strikes killed at least 52 people since dawn across the Strip.
The evacuation warnings came a day after three rockets were launched from northern Gaza. The attack set off sirens in the settlements of Zikim and Netiv Haasara on the border with the Strip. All three projectiles fell short in Gaza, according to the IDF.
Separately on May 22, Hebrew media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had decided to recall the entire Israeli delegation from the Qatari capital, Doha, due to the continued impasse in indirect negotiations with Hamas.
Some outlets quoted an unnamed Israeli official as saying that Hamas “hasn’t responded to the American proposal that Israel accepted, and is sticking to its refusal [to reach a deal]. If there is a change and Hamas accepts the offer, the delegation will head immediately to wherever needed.”
Earlier, Hamas spokesman Jihad Taha told the Qatari Al Jazeera channel that the group will not give up the “weapons of the resistance.” He also stated that the group refuses to exile its leadership from the Strip, as they are part of the Palestinian people.
Israeli officials have openly stated that the ongoing large-scale offensive would see the IDF “conquer” Gaza and retain the territory, attack Hamas, prevent the group from taking control of humanitarian aid supplies, and move Palestinians from the Strip’s north to its south. It is highly unlikely that Israel will end the offensive before these conditions are met.
