The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) bombarded a high-rise residential building in the northern Gaza Strip on September 5 and later justified the attack by claiming that the structure was being used by the Hamas Movement.
Palestinian media reported that three waves of Israeli strikes hit the 12-storey Al-Mushtaha Tower in Gaza City’s Rimal, an upscale neighborhood before the war. The residents of the building and people living in tents in its vicinity were warned by the IDF ahead of the strikes. Footage posted to social networks showed a heavy cloud of smoke at the building.
Several people were reportedly wounded as a result of the attack on the building, mainly from debris falling on nearby tents.
Justifying the attack, the IDF said in a statement that the building was being used by Hamas as “operational infrastructure,” including underground facilities that were utilized to plan attacks, stage ambushes against Israeli troops and provide escape routes for “terror operatives.”
It also claimed that Hamas had embedded sniper and anti-tank positions, surveillance systems, command-and-control centers and observation posts inside residential buildings in Gaza City, while also planting explosives nearby to ambush Israeli troops.
Additionally, the military said that several tunnels run beneath and around these buildings, warning that they will be struck soon.
Defense Minister Israel Katz made similar accusations earlier, promising to open the gates of hell in Gaza if Hamas does not surrender.
“The bolt is now being removed from the gates of Hell in Gaza,” Katz posted on X. “Once the door is opened, it will not be closed, and IDF operations will intensify — until Hamas’s murderers and rapists accept Israel’s conditions for ending the war, first and foremost the release of all hostages and disarmament — or be destroyed.”
IDF fire killed at least 51 people across Gaza on September 5, with at least seven children killed in attacks in Gaza City alone, according to Al-Jazzera, which also reported that many were fleeing towards the south of the Strip.
The casualties brought the toll from the war on the Strip to over at least 64,231. At least 161,583 have been reportedly wounded so far.
A day earlier, IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said that Israeli troops were in control of roughly 40 percent of Gaza City and intend to push further in the coming days as part of the broader plan to seize full control in a large-scale offensive.
Israel believes that the offensive will deal a final blow to Hamas. However, at this point it is hard to imagine the war ending in anything but a ceasefire-hostage agreement.
Faced with death from all sides, it will be hard for the Palestinians to surrender. No real post-Hamas plan for Gaza has been yet presented, although Israel floated the idea of deploying an Arab force there. If Hamas surrender, the most likely scenario will be Israel occupying all of the Strip and attempting to transfer Palestinians out from the enclave to any country willing to host them.
