The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) is accelerating plans to strengthen its multi-layered defense capabilities in anticipation of a new war with Iran or more missile attacks by the Houthis in Yemen, Walla News reported on August 15.
According to the Hebrew news site, Director General of the Defense Ministry, Maj. Gen. Amir Baram, has ordered the expedited development and production of air defense systems, including the Arrow 3, Arrow 4, Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and a ground-based laser system.
The directive also covers additional ground-based laser systems, various radar systems, and a number of other classified technologies.
The Iron Dome forms the lowest layer of the Israeli air defense network. The short range system is mainly designed to intercept targets like artillery rockets and drones. Earlier this year, the IDF announced that this layer was supplemented by several laser-based systems, most notably the Iron Beam.
Meanwhile, David’s Sling, the middle layer of the network, is designed to counter medium-range threats, including tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.
The Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 systems in the upper layer of the air network are designed to intercept ballistic missiles with longer range, like those launched from Iran and Yemen. Arrow 3 is particularly advanced, designed to intercept missiles outside the Earth’s atmosphere. The Arrow 4, which is still in development, is meant to counter more sophisticated ballistic missiles both in and out of the atmosphere.
Walla News’s report was not surprising. Just last month, the Israeli Ministry of Defense announced that it had signed a “large-scale” order of Arrow air defense system interceptors.
Under the deal, Israel Aerospace Industries will supply a “significant additional amount of Arrow interceptors,” the ministry said at the time, adding that the cooperation will “significantly accelerate the serial production.”
During the 12-war with Iran in June, the Islamic Republic launched over 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,100 suicides drones at targets in Israel, according to the IDF. Hebrew media reported a total of 36 missile impacts and one drone strike in populated areas across Israel. Later reports revealed that the real number of impacts was higher, and that the effectiveness of Israel’s air defense network had been serious degraded towards the end of the war.
Israeli health officials said that the Iranian attacks claimed the lives of 29 people, all but one of them civilians, and wounded over 3,000.
In addition to the threat posed by Iran’s missile arsenal, attacks from Yemen have been increasing. Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have launched close to 70 ballistic missiles and more than 20 suicide drones at targets in Israel. All but one of the missiles were intercepted or fell short, according to the IDF.
Walla News’ report came just a day after IDF chief of staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir warned that Israel was ready to attack Iran again if necessary.
The Israeli investment in air defenses suggest that the country is preparing for a new war with the Islamic Republic, and even a more serious confrontation with the Houthis.
