ISIS announced on August 28 that its terrorist had carried out two new attacks on the Egyptian Armed Forces in the Sinai Peninsula.
Both attacks took place a day earlier, near the town of Iqtiyah, which is located to the west of the city of Bir El Abd in northern Sinai.
In the first attack, ISIS terrorists targeted a battle tank with an improvised explosive device (IED). The second attack targeted a Humvee armored vehicle. An IED was also used by the terrorists. A number of Egyptian service members were allegedly killed or injured in the attacks.
These were the fourth and fifth attacks by ISIS cells in Sinai in the last ten days. On August 18, 21 and 26 the group’s terrorists carried out three attacks on Egyptian troops in the region.
Most of ISIS’ recent attacks in Sinai were carried out with IEDs. Explosive devices provide the group with a low-cost, low-risk way to inflict losses on the Egyptian Armed Forces.
Egyptian government forces are making immense effort to confront and contain ISIS terrorists in Sinai. The terrorist group is sustaining losses. Nevertheless, its influence in the region appears to be growing.
