A plane, which terrorists of the Islamic State (IS) group were going to use for an attack in the style of Japanese kamikazes, was found in the liberated part of Mosul city. Presumably, IS terrorists were going to load the plane with explosives and target it on one of convoys of the Iraqi Army. Photos of the plane were published online.

The effectiveness of such a suicide-plane is questionable due to its low load-carrying capacity – the aircraft cannot carry a lot of explosives. As Arab media joked, it is good that the IS did not capture airplanes, capable to fly, in Iraq and Syria.

On Wednesday, Commander of the Iraqi Special Forces Major General Abdul Ghani al-Asadi said that the Iraqi Armed Forces fully liberated the eastern part of Mosul from IS terrorists. According to the Iraqi General, the government forces have “established control over the territory of Mosul, located on the left bank of the Tigris [the east].” At the same time, he stressed that “a plan to restore control over the western part of the city [the right bank of the Tigris]” has also already been developed.

Meanwhile, the Command of the operation to liberate Mosul refuted the statement of al-Asadi, noting that the “offensive on IS positions is still ongoing in several areas of the city.”

Two days ago, Commander in Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, announced the beginning of the offensive on IS positions to the west of Mosul.

In addition to the low weight capacity, I would think that it is hard to hit valuable targets as well and requires more skill than driving a land vehicle. Even a slight error in the last minute could make the pilot miss by a fair degree and this plagued Kamikazes who spent thousands of pilots where the majority missed their target.

Hmm … what about the physics. The Kamikazes had one advantage, they just had to damage the structural integrity of the ship in any location. The air based bomb is hitting at an angle in a downward trajectory. Wouldn’t some of the energy be spent in the ground?

On the plus side, it could panic inexperience troops just because of the WTF factor but I think it would take several to do that.
