Two security officers were freed on June 16 after being taken hostage by a group of inmates at a prison in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.
The hostage situation began on June 15 when a group of prisoners, some with terrorism convictions, reportedly broke out of their cells and into the facility’s duty station, overwhelming two officers.
In a statement, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service said that two of its officers working with the penitentiary inspectorate were being held by undisclosed perpetrators. It noted that talks were underway and that law enforcement agencies were working at the scene.
The hostage takers were reportedly six, including three who were serving sentences for being ISIS members and preparing an attack on the Supreme Court in the Karachaevo-Cherkessian Republic in southern Russia.
Meanwhile, the two hostages included the head of the operational department and a junior inspector of the duty service. In exchange for the release of the hostages, the inmates reportedly demanded a vehicle to escape from the prison.
The inmates, who were reportedly armed with only white weapons, were not able to reach the gun room in the detention center.
After the failure of the talks, Russian security forces launched an assault on the detention center. Several shots were heard as officers stormed the center. The whole rescue operation was reportedly successfully concluded within a few minutes.
The Federal Penitentiary Service later confirmed that there had been “a special operation to free hostages in a detention center” in Rostov Region, adding that “the criminals were eliminated” and the hostages were not injured.
ISIS and other terrorist groups increased their activities in Russia after the start of the special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago.
The group claimed responsibility for the March 22 terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall in the capital, Moscow, which claimed the lives of 145 people and left more than 550 others wounded. Russian authorities said that the Kiev regime was complicit in the attack.
