On March 11, ISIS announced that its fighters in northeastern Nigeria had foiled a large-scale anti-terrorist campaign by the Nigerian Armed Forces (NAF).

The campaign which was launched on February 4 and came to an end on March 6 was meant to neutralize ISIS cells in Algarno forests which spread between the states of Borno and Yobe.

ISIS claimed that its fighters foiled the NAF campaign after an intense battles, during which many counter-attacks and raids were carried out. The terrorist group claimed that more than 200 service members were killed or injured and that 37 vehicles of the NAF were destroyed in the town of Kafa only.

The terrorist group’s news agency, Amaq, shared a number of photos from the clashes with Nigerian troops in Algarno forests on March 13.

ISIS has most certainly exaggerated the outcome of the battle in Algarno forests. However, there are little doubts that the terrorist group is growing stronger in northeastern Nigeria, mainly in Borno. Some of the group’s cells recent operations included:

  • An attack on a patrol of the NAF in the town of Malm Futuri on March 10. Ten service members were killed or injured in the attack, which was carried out with two improvised explosive devices.

To foil these attacks the gov’t will need the help of the people to be ears and eyes and give these groups away where ever they assemble.
Unfortunately the Nigerian gov’t hasn’t shown much respect for its people over the years, which will reflect on the help it receives from the population.
People tend not to forget gov’ts when they hang activists who were just trying to stop dodgy Shell oil wells from polluting their environment.

A unit similar to the Selous Scouts is required, I think.
The Selous Scouts adapted to the terrain they were fighting in.
