ISIS cells in central Syria launched late on April 7 a large attack against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) in the northwestern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

The attack reportedly targeted several military positions between the towns of Madan and al-Tabni, along a key highway that links Deir Ezzor with the neighboring governorate of Raqqa. Government troops launched flares and clashes with ISIS cells well into the morning of April 6.

The terrorists were not apparently to make any gains. However, they inflicted some losses. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a soldier from the SAA’s 17th Division and two fighters from the NDF were killed in the attack.

The attack came less than a day after the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria announced airstrikes against terrorists who moved into central Syria from the southeastern area of al-Tanf, which is controlled by the United States-led coalition and its proxies.

“The Russian Aerospace Forces’ strikes have taken out two bases of militants who had left the al-Tanf area and were holed up in hard-to-reach mountainous areas of the Amour Range in Homs governorate and al-Bishri in Deir Ezzor governorate,” Major General Yury Popov, deputy chief of the reconciliation center, said in a briefing on April 5.

Earlier this week, videos of recent Russian airstrikes on terrorists’ hideout in the central region were posted to social media.

ISIS cells have been waging an insurgency in central Syria for over six years now. The terrorists receive serious support from their comrades in the northeastern region, which is held by the U.S. and its proxies. In addition, Syrian and Russian officials have accused U.S. forces in al-Tanf of training and even arming terrorists, including members of ISIS.
