Iraqi Special Forces Landed Inside Syria From Helicopters, Captured Wanted Terrorists (Videos)

Iraq announced on December 18 that a military intelligence force captured “two important” individuals wanted by its judiciary during an airborne operation carried out in northeastern Syria, in coordination with Syrian security forces and the United States-led coalition.

In a statement, the country’s Security Media Cell said that the operation was conducted under the direction and supervision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, with technical support from the “counter-ISIS global coalition.”

“An airborne force from the Falcon Intelligence Cell (FIC), in coordination with Syrian security forces, carried out an operation targeting two important individuals wanted by the Iraqi judiciary inside Syrian territory,” the statement said.

The FIC is a military intelligence unit with law-enforcement officers, intelligence officers, and others in specialized intelligence capacities.

The cell has been dubbed “the most dangerous spy network” in Iraq and is trained by the U.S. CIA and the British MI6. It has carried out hundreds of successful operations against terrorists, rivaling other Iraqi intelligence services in Iraq in terms of scope and prowess.

The Security Media Cell described the operation in Syria as a significant step toward enhancing regional cooperation to confront cross-border security threats and safeguard national interests.

Syrian media said that the Iraqi airborne force landed between the towns of Iskenderun and Rabia in the northeastern countryside of al-Haskah.

The two individuals detained during the operation were identified as Iraqi brothers Saad and Musaed al-Khashan al-Jwaidi. They were both members of ISIS.

Iraq shares a 618-kilometer border with Syria. Following the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad last year, the country quickly established relations and engaged in security coordination with the new rulers. At the same time, it stepped up work on building fortifications along the border.

The last few years saw a notable improvement in security in Iraq, even in the western region where ISIS was very active. However, the terrorist groups influence in Syria has been growing for the past year. This could have a direct effect on the situation in Iraq.

While coordinating with the new government in Syria is the main measure Iraq has been relying on to stop ISIS, the latest operation in al-Hasakah shows that the country is prepared to engage threats across the border directly.

Syria, which recently joined the U.S.-led coalition, is now open to such operations. However, this stance could change in the near future, especially if the government managed to reimpose control over the northeastern region which is held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.
