The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, announced on September 28 that it had launched more cruise missiles and suicide drones at four targets in Israel in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
The targets were the southern city of Eilat, the northern settlement of Kiryat Shmona and two sites in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
The attacks were carried out “in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity [Israel] against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly” in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, the group said in a statement.
“Operations against enemy strongholds will continue at an increasing pace,” it added.
Videos released by the group showed what appears to be three Iranian-made Shahed-101 suicide drones. Aside from having a range of several hundred kilometers, not much is known about this type.
Multiple interceptions were reported over Israel on September 27 and 28. However, it is still unclear if any of them was linked to the IRI attack.
The IRI began carrying out attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria last October in response to the Israeli war on Gaza. Earlier this week, the group escalated its attacks against Israel in response to Israel’s ongoing aerial campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet. However, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, Damascus, after the start of the war in the Strip. Iraqi fighters and commanders were killed in some of these strikes.
