Greek shipping company Dynacom Tankers said on July 20 that two of its managed vessels were hit by projectiles of unknown origin while sailing off the coast of Oman a day earlier.
In a statement, the company said the Kavomaleas, a Malta-flagged Panamax-sized tanker, was struck by two projectiles, causing a fire in its engine room and forcing its evacuation.
“After deploying the shipboard fire suppression system, the master made the decision to evacuate the vessel,” the company said in a statement, adding that all crew members were safely located by Omani authorities and transferred to shore.
British maritime risk management group Vanguard said the incident occurred as the vessel transited about eight nautical miles northwest of the Omani town of Kumzar. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency, which had earlier reported that the vessel was on fire, said no environmental impact had been reported.
Dynacom Tankers later said in a second statement that the Liberian-flagged Acheloos, a very large crude carrier, was also struck by a projectile.
“All crew members are safe and accounted for. The vessel has proceeded to anchorage while assessments take place. There are no reports of pollution at this time,” the company said.
According to Greek maritime security company Marisks, the Acheloos and Kavomaleas were struck at approximately the same time on July 19 as they were transiting the U.S.-facilitated southern Hormuz corridor.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said at the time that two oil tankers had “exploded” and were immobilized after attempting to take what it called an unsafe southern route through the strategic waterway.
The attacks on the two vessels came as the confrontation between the United States and Iran continues to escalate. The Strait of Hormuz—a chokepoint for around 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments—has been at the center of the confrontation. The latest attacks show that the waterway remains tightly in the grip of the Islamic Republic.
