Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on July 20 that it had carried out another wave of strikes against strategic targets belonging to the United States in Jordan and Kuwait, describing the operations as the 21st and 22nd waves of “Operation Nasr-2.”
In the 21st wave, the IRGC said precision strikes destroyed 20 hangars housing troops of what it called the “child-killing” U.S. military in the al-Azraq area of Jordan, killing dozens of American personnel it referred to as “terrorist forces.”
The Guards thanked members of the Jordanian public and the country’s armed forces for intelligence it said helped enable the operation.
The same wave also included ballistic missile strikes by the IRGC’s Aerospace Force on U.S. C-17 transport aircraft and P-8 command-and-control aircraft at Aqaba Airport in Jordan, which the Corps said caused “heavy damage” to a number of the aircraft.
In a separate statement, the IRGC said the 22nd wave struck several U.S. military facilities at Ali al-Salem Airbase in Kuwait. A drone strike, it said, completely destroyed an American early-warning radar system, while aviation equipment, a spare-parts hangar, and an MQ-9 drone shelter were also hit, setting several drones on fire.
Both Jordan and Kuwait admitted coming under attack overnight, although the exact extent of the damage from the Iranian strikes remains unclear.
Separately, the IRGC said its air defense forces shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper combat drone over Eslamabad-e Gharb in western Iran, adding that the aircraft was detected, tracked, and destroyed by a newly developed system operated by its Aerospace Force as part of the country’s integrated air defense network.
Overnight, another wave of U.S. strikes hit Iran. The attack saw U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) expand its operations from the south to the northwest of the Islamic Republic.
The strikes hit multiple locations in the city of Bushehr, according to the city’s governor, while a separate strike hit two military sites in the city of Khormoj, also in Bushehr province, causing power outages, according to the province’s deputy governor for security affairs.
Elsewhere, strikes hit an area near the Silvaneh district outside Urmia, wounding several people, and a military site in southwestern Tabriz, killing one person and wounding several others, according to officials in West Azarbaijan and East Azarbaijan provinces, respectively. Iranian media also reported explosions in Chabahar, Konarak, and Mahshahr along the southern coast.
CENTCOM said in a statement that the strikes targeted Iranian military command centers, air defense and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks to “further diminish Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”
The ongoing confrontation between the U.S. and Iran, which began on July 7, marked the end of the memorandum of understanding signed by the two sides last month to end the war. A regional conflict that would see Israel and possibly Gulf states joining the attack on the Islamic Republic may now be just days away.
