Try dropping stuff in the path of the US carrier groups around Iran and for sniffing out US subs. The most efficient answer against the very big is usually the very small. Russia (and China) just got their tool for easy experimentation on those carrier groups. Something as simple as a steel wire reinforced old fishing net can be a big repair bill and effort if it gets tangled on a propeller. But they can go more devious and seed the seas in the projected path of the group with barnacle cyprids. Barnacles can add 40% to a fuel bill and already the US Navy spends $500 million a year just on their removal.

Yes, The US have lost the concept of ‘ not being a big target’. An elephant is at a greater risk from a poacher with an automatic weapon than a wily fox.
