A senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was assassinated in the northeastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor on March 4, according to unverified reports by Syrian pro-opposition news sources.
The commander, who was only identified by his nom de guerre “Hajj Mahdi,” was allegedly killed along with two of his Iraqi guards when their vehicle, a pickup truck, came under attack on a road near the town of al-Tebni in the northern Deir Ezzor countryside.
Some news sources reported that the commander was ambushed by gunmen, while others said that his vehicle was targeted with a guided missile.
The sources claimed that Hajj Mahdi was the top commander of the IRGC in Deir Ezzor, without providing any evidence proving that he really exists. The same name was used in several fake news reports about Iranian forces in Syria in the past.
The alleged assassination was not reported by the state media in Syria or Iran, which further adds to the doubt. Usually, such attacks are confirmed within a few days.
The unverified reports came two weeks after an Israeli attack on Damascus and its outskirts that targeted an installation where Syrian and Iranian officials were meeting to advance programmes to develop drones or missiles. Five were killed in the attack. They also came less than a week after a senior Syrian military engineer was assassinated in the capital.
The IRGC as well as its Syrian and Iraqi affiliates maintain a fairly large presence in the government-held part of Deir Ezzor to counter ISIS’s remaining cells in the governorate and secure the Syrian border line with Iraq.
