Iranian-backed forces in the northeastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor continue to make preparations for a new confrontation with the U.S.-led coalition.
On October 8, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that Lebanon’s Hezbollah has deployed a multiple rocket launcher near the town of al-Hussainiyah in the western Deir Ezzor countryside. According to the London-based monitoring group, the launcher was directed at the U.S. base in the Conoco gas plant.
Hezbollah also deployed reinforcements, including several military vehicles, in al-Hussainiyah and the nearby town of al-Jalamdah.
The SOHR also reported that the Afghan Liwa Fatemiyoun had deployed a radar station on a hilltop near the town of Ayyash in the northern countryside of Deir Ezzor. The monitoring group didn’t provide any information on the type of the radar.
Hezbollah, Liwa Fatemiyoun and other Iranian-backed forces in Deir Ezzor are preparing for a possible confrontation with the U.S.-led coalition.
A confrontation between Iranian-backed forces and the U.S. broke out in Syria on August 15, when two coalition bases in the country’s northeastern and southeastern regions came under attack. The U.S. responded with a series of strikes that targeted positions of Iranian-backed forces in Deir Ezzor between August 23 and 25. Iranian-backed forces hit back by attacking three bases of the coalition and its main proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces, in Deir Ezzor. Both sides sustained casualties as a result of the fire exchange.
Iranian-backed forces are present in Deir Ezzor to counter ISIS cells in the central region, deter U.S. forces in the northeastern region and secure the border line with Iraq.
