The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) has reportedly upgraded its aging French-made Dassault Mirage F1 fighter jets.
Iran seized 24 F1BQs and F1EQs which flew over from Iraq during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The fighter jets received multiple local upgrades in later years. As of 2021, 12 Mirage F1EQs and five Mirage F1BQs were reported to be in service with the IRIAF.
According to Iranian media sources, the latest upgrade enabled the fighter jets to carry the Noor anti-ship cruise missile, an Iranian copy of China’s C-802 with a range of 220 kilometers, as well as radically upgraded Iranian versions of the United States’ AIM-9P air-to-air missile and the Chinese-made PL-7 air-to-air missile.
Last month, a video posted to social media showed one of the IRIAF upgraded Mirage F1 taking off. The footage was likely shot at Chahbahar Air Base, the home of fighter jets of this type.
While the Mirage F1s were built over 40 years ago, they are still considered among the newest fighter jets in service with the IRIAF. To this day, the air force is mainly made up of U.S.-made aircraft from the 60s and 70s, like the F-4 and F-5.
Despite facing strict sanctions and economic difficulties, Iran has been working to modernize its air force. Last year, the country managed to acquire a few Yakovlev Yak-130 advanced jet trainers from Russia. A separate deal on Sukhoi Su-35s air superiority fighter jets was reportedly signed.
Still, the country continues to activate and upgrade its fighter jets as a short term solution amid growing tensions with both the U.S. and Israel.

news of iran acquiring the su-35 dates back to 2021 (perhaps earlier) with most significant news from the end of 2023. it would be difficult to believe the iranians have not already recieved their requested purchase.
it’s difficult to believe that jewish dominated russia is going to lift a finger for iran, especially after the recent syria debacle.

i heard russia offered money, military equipment, food and what not to help syria, but they refused. i also heard the syrians surrendered, so russia refused to do much because why fight for syria, when the syrians won’t fight for themselves.

i’m not so sure. russia has proved to be a very unreliable and untrustworthy partner in the past. russia supported genocidal us sanctions against both iran and n. korea; refused to complete bushehr as it was contracted to do; and refused to supply s300 s iran had paid for. it did so in return for worthless us promises (never kept) not to put missiles on russia’s borders. russia may sell out iran again.

that is all a matter of record. check it out for yourself. russia has often shot itself in the foot in this way. russia supported the destruction of libya by us/ eu bombing. unfortunately not western propaganda, but true. the recent agreements between russia and iran/ dprk are welcome developments, for what they are worth, but iran/ dprk would be well advised not to rely too much on them.

aircraft purchases are long processes. for example, finland signed a contract for the f-35’s in 2021 and will receive the first aircraft at the end of 2026. they should be in service until the 2060’s. the same situation was with the mh-90 helicopters.
if iran surrendered russia would have been in a check mate position, it would not surprise me if russian air defences were already deployed in iran.

iran is not such a big factor that it would affect russia in any way. russia is the world’s largest nuclear weapons state, which is internationally recognized as having the most war-worthy army in terms of equipment and experience. secondly, iran cannot “surrender” or “lose”. it cannot happen in iran like in iraq. it is a deeply religiously united nation where there is no point in sending abrams tanks. the us didn’t even manage in afghanistan…
