Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on July 21 that its Aerospace Force had targeted central data infrastructure belonging to the U.S. company Amazon in Bahrain with several cruise missiles.
In a statement carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency, the IRGC claimed that the targeted Amazon infrastructure in Bahrain was destroyed.
Sirens sounded in Bahrain more than once throughout the day, with the interior ministry issuing several statements calling on residents to “head to the nearest safe place.” There were also reports of interceptions and impacts in different parts of the Gulf state.
The target of the IRGC’s latest attack was most likely Amazon Web Services’ primary Bahrain data center, known as “me-south-1.”
The center, located near the town of Zallaq on the western coast of the Gulf state, serves as a cornerstone of the company’s Middle East cloud infrastructure, delivering low-latency computing, storage, and artificial intelligence services across the region while supporting regional digital transformation.
Tech companies were in the line of fire throughout the earlier stages of the war on the Islamic Republic. In March, apps and digital services in the United Arab Emirates reported outages following drone strikes on Amazon Web Services’ data centers in the Gulf state, with the facility in Bahrain also damaged.
Later in April, the IRGC threatened attacks on a range of U.S. tech companies with operations in the Middle East, including Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, and Google.
The latest attack shows that Iran is once again expanding its target set, incorporating new categories of infrastructure into the framework of the ongoing limited confrontation. This comes after a serious escalation that saw the U.S. target civilian infrastructure in the Islamic Republic.
