Iran’s armed forces said they carried out a series of missile and drone strikes against United States military bases in Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq’s Kurdistan region early on September 2, describing the attacks as retaliation for American strikes inside Iran that killed at least seven service members and five civilians at a wedding.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement its Ground Force struck the command center and living quarters of the U.S. commander at Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait, setting fire to a drone hangar and destroying a number of drones. It claimed that the strike killed a number of U.S. personnel.
In Jordan, the Corps’ Aerospace Force said it carried out a “heavy ballistic-missile strike against the U.S. Marine barracks known as Camp Titiin in Jordan, located on the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba,” according to a second statement.
“The attack killed a large number of U.S. personnel and destroyed several key facilities and the enemy’s attack helicopters,” the Corps said.
A third IRGC statement said the Corps struck hangars housing long-range RQ-4 and MQ-9 drones at another U.S. base in Jordan known as Prince Hassan.
“A number of drones were destroyed, and several pilots and flight technical crewmembers were killed,” the statement said. “Several of their technical infrastructure facilities were also set ablaze.”
The Corps also said it carried out combined missile-and-drone strikes on U.S. bases in Erbil, in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The operations “destroyed a maintenance facility and warehouses containing technical equipment belonging to the terrorist US military, and destroyed the guidance system of a US surveillance balloon at the base,” the Corps said.
“The valiant warriors of the Ground Forces also set fire to the fuel storage tanks at the base and killed a number of the aggressors,” it added.
Separately, the IRGC announced that its air defense system had earlier shot down a U.S. MQ-9 drone, the 50th such aircraft it says it has downed since the start of the war on Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Army said it launched the 29th phase of its Operation Sa’eqeh, or Lightning, carrying out a large-scale drone strike against U.S. military facilities at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain, targeting radar installations and gathering points for U.S. forces.
In a statement, the Army called the strike “a forceful and extensive response to the enemy’s acts of aggression” and said its servicemen would “exact a harsh and regret-inducing revenge on the aggressors.”
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said it launched strikes in response to recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members. According to the command, the strikes hit air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets and facilities, mine-laying capabilities, and communications sites.
In southern Iran, shrapnel from a U.S. missile attack on Sirik county, in Hormozgan province, struck a residential building in the city of Kouhestak that was hosting a wedding ceremony, Farsnews reported. As many as five people were killed, including a child, and 68 others were wounded, according to the report. CENTCOM ignored the incident.
Moreover, three members of the Basij force were killed and several others wounded in a U.S. strike on Lavan Island, said Abdolkarim Pouladifar, deputy commander of the Guards’ Seyed al-Shohada unit in Deyr county.
Meanwhile, in Kermanshah province, four members of the IRGC’s Aerospace Force were killed in a U.S. strike, the Corps’ provincial public relations office said.
In Khuzestan province, the U.S. launched attacks near the cities of Ahvaz and Aghajari, Deputy Governor for Security and Law Enforcement Valiollah Hayati said.
Press TV also reported that U.S. strikes hit the county of Chabahar in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan, among other areas, though it did not provide further detail.
The U.S. launched its first attack on Iran in over a month late on August 30, igniting another confrontation with the Islamic Republic.
The latest wave of American strikes proved particularly deadly. Despite threats from U.S. President Donald Trump—who even vowed to wipe out Iran as a country—the Islamic Republic responded with full force. Even amid this escalation, a return to full-scale war remains highly unlikely. The confrontation could nevertheless drag on for weeks and might expand to involve Israel.
