Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on March 6 that they had targeted a United States base in the United Arab Emirates that they alleged had been used as a launchpad for a deadly strike on a school.
The strike in question hit a girls’ elementary school in Minab county in the south of the Islamic Republic on the first day of the American-Israeli war, February 28, killing at least 168 children. Tehran blamed Washington, and a recent investigation by CNN said that the U.S. military was likely responsible.
“Al Dhafra Air Base, belonging to American terrorists in the region, was targeted using drones and precision missiles,” the IRGC said in a statement broadcast on state TV.
Al Dhafra Air Base is located around 32 kilometers to the south of the Emirate capital, Abu Dhabi. The base is considered critical for the operations of the U.S. military in the Middle East. It hosts advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft.
The IRGC said that its latest attacks, which also targeted Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, and Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, destroyed early-warning radar systems, fuel storage tanks for U.S. aircraft, runways, and maintenance workshops for MQ-9 Reaper combat drones and US U-2 Dragon Lady spy planes.
A satellite image released a day earlier by China’s MizarVision showed multiple impacts caused by Iranian missiles and drones at Al Dhafra Air Base. Hangars, maintenance facilities, warehouses and even administrative buildings were apparently hit.

MQ-9 are typically situated in some of the hangars which were hit, in addition to American and Emirate air forces. These drones are primarily used to collect intelligence, but have the ability to conduct pinpoint strikes. The advanced drones can operate for more than 27 hours and reach altitudes of over 25,000 feet.
The area where the U-2s are usually deployed didn’t appear in the image, however. Designed for all-weather, day-and-night intelligence gathering at altitudes above 70,000 feet, the plane can gather signals intelligence, take detailed photographs, test the atmosphere for radiation from nuclear weapons tests, and even act as a communication node.
Following the IRGC’s announcement, photos showing a large fire at a section of Al Dhafra Air Base where an American-made MIM-104 Patriot long-range air defense system is deployed were leaked. According to the source of the photos, the system was wiped out by Iranian strikes.

The attack was likely the largest to target the UAE since the start of the war, with the Emirate Ministry of Defense announcing the interception of nine ballistic missiles and 112 drones on March 6 only. The full extent of the war will likely be known in the coming days.
The UAE has so far refrained from responding to Iran, but a recent report by The Wall Street Journal revealed that Abu Dhabi is freezing billions of dollars of Iranian assets held in the country. Such a move could trigger an even stronger retaliation from Iran.
