The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized an Israeli-affiliated container ship near the Strait of Hormuz on April 13, Iranian media confirmed.
The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said that a special forces unit of the IRGC Navy carried out the raid on the ship, which was identified as the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, a container ship associated with London-based Zodiac Maritime. The company is a part of the Zodiac Group owned by Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer.
The IRGC Navy is moving the ship into Iranian territorial waters, according to the news agency, which didn’t clarify why it was seized.
An initial report of the incident by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, said that the ship was seized some 50 nautical miles northeast of the United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah port.
Video footage first obtained by The Associated Press showed commandos raiding the ship near the Strait of Hormuz by helicopter.
Zodiac Maritime declined to comment. However, the Geneva-based MSC acknowledged the seizure and said 25 crew had been aboard the vessel.

In an initial response to the incident, Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz called on nations to list the Guard as a terrorist organization.
“[Iran] is a criminal regime that supports Hamas’ crimes and is now conducting a pirate operation in violation of international law,” Katz said.
The seizure of the Israel-linked cargo ship by the IRGC came amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran over the April 1 Israeli strike on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which claimed the lives of 13 people, including senior commanders and members of the IRGC.
It is still unclear however if the seizure was Iran’s promised response to the attack, or just an inital move meant to send a message to Israel and its allies.
