Iran Claims To Have Shot Down ‘Enemy Fighter Jet’ Over Persian Gulf (Video)

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on April 2 that its air defenses successfully targeted an “enemy fighter jet in the south of Qeshm Island”.

In a statement carried by semi-official Fars news agency, the guards said that the fighter jet crashed between Hengam Island and Qeshm Island after getting hit, then sank into the depths of the Persian Gulf. The statement did not specify which country the jet belonged to.

Video footage of the engagement was released. The footage, apparently taken from a ground-based imager thermal tracking system, shows what appears to be a single engine fighter jet maneuvering and dropping flares after what appears to be a blast.

The fighter jet was likely an F-16, flown by both the United States and Israel, in addition to several Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) was quick to deny the Iranian claims, saying in a post to X that “all U.S. fighter aircraft are accounted for,” and that the IRGC “has made the same false claim at least half a dozen times.” Israel has not addressed the claims yet.

On March 19, an F-35 Lightning II fighter jet of the U.S. Air Force made a “hard landing” at an undisclosed American air base in the Middle East after getting hit by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile that caused damage and even wounded the pilot.

CENTCOM acknowledged the incident, and later reports revealed that the fighter jet, which costs more than $100 million, won’t be returning to service anytime soon.

Later on March 21, Iran released footage showing an F-15 fighter jet getting hit with an anti-aircraft missile over its southern region.

The latest engagements indicate that Iran is successfully restoring the upper tier of its air defense network. As the war drags on, both the U.S. and Israel will likely take more aerial losses.
