Early on January 26, a convoy moving logistic supplies for the United States-led coalition was targeted with an explosive device as it was passing near the town of al-Yusufiyah to the south of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad,
The so-called International Resistance claimed responsibility for the attack a few hours later. In a statement, the shadowy group said that the convoy was “damaged.” No casualties were reported as a result of the attack.
“By the grace of God Almighty and your prayers for your resistance, your sons in the International Resistance faction were able to target a logistic supply convoy of the American occupation in al-Yusufiyah, Baghdad … The operation resulted in the damage of the convoy,” the brief statement reads.
The International Resistance is one of several pro-Iranian armed factions that emerged in Iraq after the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, and Commander of Iran’s Quds Force, Qassim Soleimani, by the U.S. more than three years ago. The main goal of these Iraqi factions is to expel U.S. forces from the country.
This was the International Resistance’s third attack on the U.S.-led coalition this month. On January 12, the group’s cells targeted a supply convoy of the coalition in the Taji district to the north of Baghdad. Later on January 19, the group attacked a convoy moving two American Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) systems near al-Yusufiyah.
Attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq will not likely stop any time soon. Despite of this, Washington seems to be determined to keep its troops in the country for the long term in order to counter Iran’s influence.
