On October 8 morning, an attack with indirect fire targeted a key base of the Turkish military in the northern region of Syria.

The base, which is located near the town of Dabiq in the northern Aleppo countryside, was reportedly targeted with several artillery shells and rockets. The attack resulted in material losses. However, no casualties were reported.

In response to the attack, the Turkish military shelled the town of Sewarxa, Sheikh Issa and Tell Zuwiyan. The three towns are located in an area of the northern Aleppo countryside that is jointly controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian Arab Army. The Turkish shelling didn’t result in any losses.

The attack on Dabiq base was likely carried out by the SDF or one of its affiliates in response to recent Turkish airstrikes on northern and northeastern Syria.

The most recent wave of Turkish airstrikes, which was on October 4, targeted positions of the SDF in the northeastern Aleppo countryside and the northern countryside of Raqqa.

The SDF and its affiliates, first and foremost the Afrin Liberation Forces, attacked several Turkish bases and border posts in the northern Aleppo countryside over the last few weeks. The attacks inflicted heavy human and material loess on the Turkish military. However, this only led to more escalation by Ankara.

Turkey could soon use the SDF’s repeated attacks on its bases as a pretext to launch a new large-scale military operation in northern and northeastern Syria. The Turkish military and its proxies have been preparing for such an operation since May.
