The Russian military has destroyed five Baba Yaga-type attack drones of Kiev forces in the Kherson direction, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on April 20.

The drones were destroyed by scouts from the Dnepr Group of Forces, according to the ministry, which released video footage showing the drones falling down after being targeted with what appears to be sniper rifles equipped with thermal sights.

The term Baba Yaga is used to refer to a series of large multirotor attack drones which Kiev forces have been using since the start of the Russian special military operation. These drones are usually equipped with a thermal imager and a two-way datalink, sometimes based on a Starlink satellite internet terminal.

The drones are typically armed with multiple mortar-sized unguided munitions, with some models capable of carrying a payload weighing up to 15 kilograms.

While electronic warfare remains the first line of defense against Baba Yaga-type drones, the Russian military began to experiment with new methods to deal with such drones in recent months.

Last month, Russia showcased for the first time a man-portable laser gun capable of downing drones similar to the Baba Yaga.

Videos from earlier this month also showed a Baba Yaga being downed by an interceptor FPV drone, and a second getting hit by munition dropped from another attack drone.

Russian efforts to contain the threat posed by Baba Yaga-type drones have been so far successful for the most part. However, the development of new methods to counter this threat will not likely stop due to the proliferation of drone technology.
