In Video: Russian Missiles Shred S-300 System Near Key Poltava Air Base

The Russian military has destroyed a Soviet-made S-300PS long-range air defense system that was recently deployed by Kiev forces in the Poltava region to protect Mirgorod Air Base.

The system was deployed near the settlement of Koptiv, less than 14 kilometers to the east of Mirgorod Air Base. It is unclear when exactly the system was targeted, but video footage showing the strike first surfaced online on July 5 and was officially released by the Russian Ministry of Defense the next day.

The footage shows two Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles impacting the site where the system is deployed. As a result, two transporter erector launchers, of the 5P85D or the 5P85S type, two 5N63S fire control radars, one of which was deployed on a 40V6M semi-mobile mast, a command and control vehicle and three other service vehicles were destroyed. In addition, some 40 Ukrainian troops and technicians were killed or wounded.

Kiev forces had around 100 S-300P, S-300PT, S-300PS and S-300V1 batteries in service prior to the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago. The country received a single S-300PMU battery from Slovakia in the very first few months of the operation.

The S-300PS system destroyed in Koptiv was recently deployed there in a desperate attempt by Kiev forces to protect the Mirgorod Air Base, which was struck two times earlier this week.

The first strike, which took place on July 1, destroyed five Su-27 fighter jets and damaged two others. The very next day, the second strike hit the base and a Mi-24 gunship helicopter was destroyed. Both attacks were carried out using Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles

The recent strikes on Poltava highlighted the Russian military’s intelligence collection capabilities and its ability to strike any target within Ukraine with high precision at any time.
