The Russian military has targeted another Ukrainian MIM-104 Patriot long-range air defense system of Kiev forces, the Ministry of Defense announced on May 22.
In a brief statement, the ministry said that the system was struck with an Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile close to the settlement of Orzhonikidze in the Dnepropetrovsk region. It added that the strike destroyed an AN/MPQ-65 fire control radar, an engagement control station, either an AN/MSQ-104 or 132, and two M90x launchers.
Video footage released by the ministry showed a direct hit on the heart of the system, the fire control radar and the engagement control station, as well as secondary explosions from the two launchers.
Ukraine received eight Patriot batteries and additional launchers from the United States, Germany and other NATO members over the last two years. The systems were a mix of PAC-2 and PAC-3. Most of these systems have already been damaged or destroyed by the Russian military.
To make up for the losses, it was announced earlier this year that Ukraine will receive two additional batteries, one from either Germany or Greece and another from Israel after refurbishment.
The Iskander-M was responsible for most of Ukraine’s Patriot losses. It has a range of nearly 500 kilometers and can be armed with different types of conventional warheads, weighing between 710 and 800 kg. The highly-maneuverable missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. It can be also equipped with an optical seeker with a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.
The Russian military intensified strikes on the air defenses of Kiev forces over the past year, destroying dozens of radars and air defense systems.

russia was attempting to maintain a military the size of that of the united states with an economy smaller than france. it doesn’t work. the only reason they could do it at all was by leveraging those enormous stocks of old soviet weapons, but to do it within a cost that was a reasonable percentage of gdp they had to skimp on everything else — training, maintenance, even uniforms and first aid kits.
