The Russian military has begun using high-voltage power lines as concealed positions for first-person view (FPV) suicide quadcopters, allowing the drones to wait for potential targets from elevated vantage points before launching attacks.
The tactic was first reported by Ukrainian military expert Serhii Beskrestnov, better known as Flash, in a November 5 post on Telegram.
Beskrestnov, who included footage of one such ambush, urged Ukrainian troops to account for the new drone threat when operating near power infrastructure.
By positioning the quadcopters directly on electrical wires, Russian operators can keep them above ground level and potentially conceal them from Ukrainian troops moving below.
Rather than continuously flying over an area in search of targets, which exposes the drones and drains their power, the quadcopters can remain in position until suitable targets come within range. Within seconds, the operator can lock on to a target and engage it.
The approach adds another dimension to the threat posed by FPV suicide quadcopters, which have become a major weapon in the Russian special military operation zone in Ukraine.
Russian operators have developed several drone ambush tactics in recent years, from lying low near key routes to incorporating solar panels to extend endurance, and even installing microphones on drones so they can acoustically locate passing targets while remaining completely out of sight.
