The Russian military has destroyed yet another battery of M777 155 mm towed howitzers, which were recently supplied by the US, Canada and Australia to Kiev forces.
The battery was targeted with 2A36 Giatsint-B 152 mm towed field guns. A video of the counter-battery strike was released by Russian journalist Vladlen Tatarsky on August 4. Russian artillerymen used a drone to locate the Ukrainian battery as well as to coordinate the strike.
The M777 has a maximum rate of fire of seven rounds per minute with a range of up to 40 kilometers when firing Excalibur precision-guided rounds. On the other hand, the Soviet-made Giatsint-B has a range of 30.5 kilometers with regular 152 mm rounds, and up to 40 kilometers with rocket-assisted rounds. The gun can fire up to six rounds per minute.
The US supplied 108, Canada four and Australia six M777 howitzers to Kiev forces to help thwart the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. Kiev also received hundreds of thousands of 155 mm rounds.
The Russian military has already destroyed many of Ukraine’s new-acquired M777 howitzers. Most of them were targeted with artillery.
Ukraine received more than 200 artillery piece from its Western allies over the last few months. Yet, its forces are still outgunned by the Russian military. In a recent video address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that his forces cannot overcome the Russian military’s advantage in artillery even with all the support from the West.
