The Russian military has successfully targeted and destroyed two more American-made HIMARS multiple rocket launchers of Kiev forces.
Video footage of the strike on the HIMARS launchers was posted to social networks on May 1. The two launchers were targeted shortly after arriving at a small forest near the settlement of Leliukivka in the Kharkiv region. The launchers were reportedly moved to the area in preparation for an attack on the nearby Russian region of Belgorod. However, they were quickly detected by the Russian military.
According to Russian news sources, both HIMARS launchers were targeted by a Russian Tornado-S multiple rocket launcher using 300 mm precision-guided munitions.
The United States has supplied Kiev forces with at least 39 HIMARS launchers since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.
These launchers are typically armed with M30/M31 series GMLRS GPS-guided rockets, which have a range of more than 70 kilometers, or MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles with a range between 165 and 300 kilometers depending on the version.
The Russian military has already damaged or destroyed many of Ukraine’s HIMARS launchers. This coupled with the efforts of Russian air defense and electronic warfare means have very much limited the effectiveness of the American-made system.
