The Russian military continues to use improvised ground suicide drones to target the fortifications of Kiev forces in the special military operation zone.

On April 16, the Russian Ministry of Defense released video footage showing a recent attack with a ground suicide drone armed with a TM-62 anti-tank blast mine on a heavily fortified post of Kiev forces in the Kharkiv direction. The attack was carried out by the Zapad Group of Forces.

“A hostile stronghold halting the advance of Russian assault detachments was detected during reconnaissance. The Kamikaze drone rolled into the dugout of the enemy and detonated a TM-62 anti-tank mine. Thus, AFU [Armed Forces of Ukraine] manpower was eliminated,” the ministry said in a post to its official channel on Telegram.

The TM-62 has a7.5 kilograms explosive charge. While the mine was originally designed to disable tanks and other tracked vehicles, it can be also used for demolition.

Videos showing similar attacks with drones carrying TM-62 mines were shared by the ministry on March 20 and 22. The attacks were also carried out by the Zapad Group of Forces in the direction of Khakiv, one of the most fortified fronts in the special military operation zone.

The Russian military began using improvised ground suicide drones with the start of the special military operation, but the manufacturing and usage of such systems expanded significantly over the last year.

A typical drone is typically built around a tracked or a wheeled chassis with an electric engine. The drones are usually controlled via a first-person view system made up of a camera and wireless two-way data link, although some drones were spotted in the past using fiber optic cables as a more secure way to transmit data. TM-62 mines are the most common payload.

While the range of these drones is limited to a few kilometers, this is still more than enough to target fortifications built right on the front.

All in all, ground suicide drones have proven to be a reliable, cost-effective way to deal with fortified posts, especially ones which are too small to waste more valuable military resources on.
