The Russian military is actively using Orion combat drones to counter Ukrainian drone boats operating in the Black Sea close to the Crimean Peninsula.
The Orion was developed by Russia’s Kronstadt Group to conduct both reconnaissance and combat missions. The drone has an endurance of 24 hours and a combat radius of 250 kilometers. It is typically equipped with an electro-optical reconnaissance and targeting system. However, it can also carry a surveillance radar or an electronic and signal intelligence gathering system.
Video footage showing an Orion destroying a Ukrainian drone boat somewhere near the shores of Crimea surfaced online on August 8. The drone targeted the boat with an X-BPLA, an air-launched version of the Kornet-D anti-tank missile.
The X-BPLA missile is guided via semi-active laser (SAL) instead of the laser beam-riding (LBR) system used in the original Kornet-D.
The difference between SAL and LBR lies in how the missile acquires and maintains its target. In SAL, the missile homes in on laser energy reflected off the target from a laser designator. In LBR, the missile uses a rear-mounted sensor to stay within a laser beam directed at the target from a laser designator.
While the LBR offers unmatched jamming-resistance, SAL allows for maneuverability, for both the laser designator and the munition. Because of this, it is a more logical option when it comes to munitions designed to be launched from fast-moving platforms against fast-moving targets, as in the case with the Orion using the X-BPLA against a drone boat.
X-BPLA has a maximum range of eight kilometers and is armed with a six-kilogram high explosive fragmentation warhead.
It’s worth noting that Ukraine stepped up attempts to attack Crimea with drone boats in recent months. Besides the more traditional explosive-rigged boats, Kiev forces are using new models which are designed to carry small FPV suicide quadcopters or armed with heat-seeking anti-aircraft missiles.
