shotguns are already in use, but mainly for defending and cleaning trenches. one man can’t hold an automat and and a shotgun, because it weights 3 kg + weight of ammunition, which is almost useless for another purpose, because it can’t penetrate armored vest and helmet except bullet cartridge.
