The Russian military has struck a large communication tower in the Chernihiv region used by Kiev forces to command and control drones.
Ukrainian troops and equipment deployed in the vicinity of the tower, located near the settlement of Novgorod-Seversky, were first targeted with an Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile armed with a fuel-air explosive enhanced-blast warhead. Several vehicles and a drone launcher were destroyed.
Soon after, three Geran-type suicide drones truck the tower, destroying all communication equipment installed on it. Video footage of the combined strike was posted to social networks on June 11.
The Iskander-M is said to have a range of nearly 500 kilometers and can be armed with different types of conventional warheads, weighing between 710 and 800 kg. The highly-maneuverable missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system (INS).
Meanwhile, the Geran is available in two versions, which are alleged to be copies of the Iranian-made Shahed-131 and 136 suicide drones.
Both versions are guided by a GLONASS-aided INS. The Geran-1 has a range of 900 kilometers with a warhead weighing 15 kilograms, while the Geran-2 has a range of 2,500 kilometers with a warhead weighing 50 kilograms.
Ukraine escalated its drone attacks against Russia in the last few weeks to make up for its never ending defeats in the battlefield.
The Russian military didn’t only retaliate with large-scale strikes against high-value targets deep in Ukraine, but also stepped up its efforts to hunt down the drone units of Kiev forces. Several such units were neutralized recently, which shows a significant improvement in Russian intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance capabilities, also known as ISTAR.
